Bah. Computers.
Desktop tower kicked it over the long weekend.G33ky friend #3 (who tried hilariously for over an hour to turn the thing on Wednesday night) thinks it’s a $20 heat-sink fan… but this non-functional fan may have fried something else as well.
G33ky friend #1 (who built the one of the two computers this was frankensteined into) knows that a $10 CMOS Battery has needed replacing for the past… probably 18 months?
(G33ky friend #2 built up the current computer for me four years ago, but I didn’t bother asking his opinion on this matter.)
Me is worried it’s a hard-drive failure. My main concern is the photos I’ve taken recently, that I didn’t get time to back-up yet.
Decision is being made on what to do… about 80% on buying/building new desktop computer. This one lasted me over four years, and the parts from it were already around two to three years old already. If I buy a pre-fab machine I might even move into the realm of Vista (and immediately into Windows7)
So while it saddens me that my computer’s going to soon be retired to someone else’s pet project (There’s no end of g33ky friends who love taking old machines and turning them into Linux servers, or art-installations it seems!)
It makes me giggle ENDLESSLY every time I read about someone’s two year old Macintosh machine kicking the bucket, because I paid at most one third of what they paid for their computer, mine has lasted four times as long. And I run Windows!
