Week in Review

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Another week of not really blogging.  Bad blogger! Bah.

This whole “never being near a computer” thing is quite daunting.

Anyways, this week I’ve seen…

My coworker come back to work on Monday, to simply tell us she’s leaving us forever at the end of the week (for now anyways) as she’s gotten another job offer while away and has accepted.  Surprising, but not surprising at the same time.  Didn’t think it would be so soon but them’s the breaks.  We hugged, and she’s got the address to my blog now.  Other than that… nothing exciting at work.

Drumming on Monday was cool.  No drum kit but I’m still doing pretty decent when it comes to the class.

Body flow was nice Monday night.  Although I felt really sick Tuesday (and for the rest of the week) so I’m thinking I may have picked something up from there.  I ended up skipping my BodyCombat class on Tuesday and my normal gym-routine on Wednesday (and unicycles on Thursday) because of it.

Friday drove up to see Colin, nothing fancy-pants about that.  Saturday being Valentines day I decided my gift to him would be to take off the stainless steel CBR bracelet I always wear so I wouldn’t poke or scratch him all day.  Took him into Newmarket to get some job applications out of the way since he’s having trouble finding work still, and finally surprised him with a sushi dinner.

Poor planning on my part, I somehow didn’t think to call ahead and make a reservation.  And we were starving, so I ordered way too much food the first go, and we ate too fast, and I had to leave behind a lot more than I really wanted to, but there was just too much.  Thankfully (I suppose) they were too busy to care and didn’t charge me for all the extra.  I tried to leave a good tip but I don’t think I really did (I probably just hit 15% and as I was leaving realized I wanted to leave closer to 20-25%.  oops)

I guess to make up for it, I felt kind of sick when I left and got back to Colin’s place, which resulted in some interesting, but very TMI type of bathroom exercises.  Drove home once everything cleared well enough for me to drive.

Sunday I ended up at the IWasCured Valentines weekend suspensions.  Didn’t really do anything important, stayed away for the most part from anything having ANYTHING to do with suspensions, and probably would have been okay to not bother going.  But it was a good time and while I didn’t really learn anything I probably was still a bit of a help.  I held rickety ladders steady whenever anyone started climbing up, and other than that… helped clear out at the end of the night.

Today I was supposed to get a driving lesson from Brandon but he ended up back at his folk’s house instead so I really just totally caught up on laundry (it *is* really nice to see a completely empty dirty-clothes hamper I must admit) and slept a LOT.  Found out that my disc 3 of Simpsons Season 10 is buggered in a manufacturing-defect type of way (but I bought it on Boxing day so I doubt anyone would do anything for me now) and my Oz Season Six had totally been bashed and cracked the DVD case causing the 2nd DVD to get scratched up.  Boo.  Kept watching TV & falling asleep in front of it.  Had the windows open for a bit to try & get the stuffy-ness out.

But thats it.

Work Tuesday to Friday. (And completely on my own this coming Thursday & Friday as well.  Eep!)

Maybe Body Combat on Tuesday (see how I feel)

Massage therapy apointment (hopefully, need to book that tomorrow) and BROOMFILLER on Wednesday

Showman’s League Annual Dinner on Thursday (doing photography with Phil)  My main task will be following around a magician as he wow’s people.(?!???)

Friday is… Friday!

Recapping

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Alright.  I’ve been lazy with the blogging because I’m never really near a computer.  I’ll re-cap each week for February thus far & see how we do.

Work related –

Monday (Feb 2nd) the bosses decided to upgrade our system software.  They wanted to do it Monday morning because doing it over the weekend would have cost an additional $4,000.  Well, the idea of 2 hours of lost productivity may have been worth the savings in not paying the guy overtime, except it dragged on until 11am, noon, 2pm… etc.  I spent most of my day Twittering (since Facebook has been banned) and… not much else.

Tuesday we found out our third wheel (my second co-worker) was going to be away all week to be with her mom (her dad passed away the week before) and we were doing quotes by hand.  Wednesday I was on the on our customer’s online system while my coworker was doing quotes by hand. Thursday we were on a hacked system (we’d lost our most recent 3 months worth of work, and any work being done was temporary) and finally Friday afternoon we were back on the go, with all the quotes done Thursday & Friday morning swimming in a separate database.

Not fun.

Drumming related –

I’m doing good.  Not perfect all the time but generally I seem to pick up things okay and keep up with everyone else.  I find it hilarious when everyone’s trying to follow me or use me as an example because I’m sort of… doing everything my own way.  Class tomorrow, but not on Family day.  I think we’re supposed to get an actual drum-kit in?

Work out related –

I’m pretty sure I went to Body flow on Monday, and Body Combat on Tuesday.  Saturday I wanted to go to Body Jam, but found there’s a Body Combat on earlier at the Womens only location across the street, and went to that instead before driving up to see Colin.

One full week!

What's $4,000??

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Alright. In my vain attempt to get to work on time, I showed up around 8:05am. Our systems were down, due to being upgraded. At 8:30 we were told “an hour and a half” and I'm thinking “I should have slept in.” Apparently we COULD have done this upgrade over the weekend, but it would have cost an extra $4,000 in overtime.

*ahem* its 3:30pm right now. We're still not working because of this error or that error.

I've Twitted (can't log into Facebook for some reason, is anyone else getting that problem?) more today than… all last week!

Snail mail I received at work.

Well, not me, my co-worker.  And it came with samples of everything they wanted printed.

I must admit, it’s bloody frustrating when people do that.  I don’t want to simply look at the pieces to give you a price.  I want to know what on earth I’m doing.  Sending me a folder with about 15-20 different pieces, and saying “Price it” isn’t going to work.  I don’t know what colours are being printed (special? not special?) what paper to print on (since they’re ALL DIFFERENT) or who you are (They’re not even a current customer of ours.)

But I just thought this hand-written note that was attached to the samples was the best.  So here it is:

To Estimating Dept:

Hello,
Can you please quote me on the package in this envelope – everything in the folder and the actual folder.  The qty is for 1000, 2000 & 5000 pcs.

Please include trade pricing b/c we are a distributor and PST Exempt.

If your prices are good this could become a repeat order however please keep in mind that the profit will be split amongst 3 sales reps so the margins must be profitable for all.

Once quoted, please mail back the package to 140 F******** ***** Unit 2, Concord, ONT ******

Please call me if you have any questions @ (905) ***-**** x235 or e-mail me at admin@********.com.

Regards, Anna V******

Alright.  “Quote everything” while we don’t really do it, it’s not too horrible of a request.  “Please include trade-pricing” even though trade generally means you do most of the leg-work, and here you are asking us to do it all.  “Please keep in mind the profit will be split amonst 3 sales reps…” Why would I care how you split your profits?  We’re not going to share your profits with you. “… please mail back the package to…” You didn’t provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.  While this type of request isn’t uncommon, I’d think it common courtsey to not ask us to fork over money for something we might not even get to work on.

So ya, I giggled.

P.S. 12:35pm and we’re still not working.  And I’ve already eaten my lunch.  Apparently to have done this upgrade on the network over the weekend would have cost an extra $4000 in overtime for the people upgrading.  At this point I think it would have been money well spent, since the entire estimating department is down, as is probably 95% of the production department.
