Canada's 40th General Election

I hope everyone's somehow going out there to vote!

We’re off to see the wizard

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Not exactly, but this weekend is the Thanksgiving day long weekend for Canada. My family doesn’t normally celebrate in such an approved way, such as turkeys & stuffing & 50 of your closest family members crammed into a one bedroom flat… because being Chinese we probably just don’t understand the holiday. Last year I ended up spending the weekend at my boyfriend’s house who actually did have turkey & all the trimmings.

So my cousins & their two kids had moved to Sudbury, and are quite alone in such a Northern locale without many visitors, I suggested that me and my mom drive up to see them, should they be welcoming visitors.  They’re ecstatic from what I’ve gathered.

Not for our visit, but because we have a generally empty vehicle that can be filled with Chinese groceries that can’t be purchased (or are overpriced) in their Northern Ontario town.  I just find it hilarious we’re bringing four bags of 10kg of rice, among a LOT of other things!

A part of me just feels that… if you move to a white-bread neighbourhood, be prepared to eat white-bread food!  And apparently the other Chinese people have been capitalizing on the idea of driving to Toronto and overcharging.  I personally think “Look, someone is driving four hours to buy these to sell to you, do you really think they’ll charge the same prices as the grocery stores are??”

It’s funny.  I think I’ll be laughing a lot at the expense of my cousins this weekend.

I’ll also be offline most of the time!

You’re… asking for… what?

Friday, October 10th, 2008

It was a bit surreal today.  I received a phone call from the representitive of my riding’s Conservitive party.  They were asking and hoping for my support in the upcoming election.  It creeped me out a little only because the guy was talking so fast and was just a bit too hyper & eager to have my answer.

I ended up replying with an extremely “I…. don’t…. know” to his question of “Can we count on your support?”  Seriously, it felt like he was trying to railroad me into supporting for them, as if I said Yes, then voted for someone else, they would come get me or something.

From my answer I knew he was gearing up to convince me, since he got (shockingly enough) even MORE eager and excited with the idea that I was still an undecided voter.  I had to let him know that I’d already voted so there’s no real reason to be talking to me.

Then… the weird part.  The guy asked me if I voted for them or not.  Now… ballots are secret.  So no one knows who voted for who. (I know this because I’ll be one of the many polling clerks this coming election on Tuesday) and my answer really wouldn’t have mattered one way or another.  I could have lied or told the truth but that wasn’t the point.

The point is, it’s a secret ballot, and I don’t want ANY political party having any notes on who I vote for.

So I told the guy I wasn’t comfortable giving out that information to them, or anyone else.

Thankfully the guy on the phone obviously had a long night of calling people, thanked me for my time and left me alone.

But still.  That was damn weird.

Swimming horses in an indoor pool?

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

That was a weird dream I had last night.  The bits and pieces that I have been able to cobble together are as follows.

I’m sitting(?) around in my old house, thte big one with the indoor pool, and it’s cold.  So the heater was turned on, and the place starts to warm up.  Except while I was sitting in the family room (with a patio door that backs to the indoor pool) I notice some explosions & small fireballs coming out of the enclosure for the pool’s water pump.

Go into the pool area to check the pump, and it is emitting a small fireball explosion every few minutes.  I look over at the pool to see my friend Matt swimming with two horses.(?!?)  So I try to coax one of the horses over to the shallow end so I can pet him, while talking to Matt about something to do with the pool.  He explained to me how the heater in the pool was now hooked up to heat the rest of the house so we could have a warm pool & a warm house at the same time.

I’m turning around to look at the heater again, and it somewhat resembles a printing press, with paper filled into various compartments.  I somehow deduct this is one of the probable causes of the fire, so while I wet down a towel to place over the spout that is putting out the fire to keep it from doing so, I am pulling out stacks of paper to hand to people to put elsewhere, away from the fire.

Some of the paper is blank, while others looks like it has been printed on before.  I somehow figure out that this must have been a school project at some point because I asked to have the pre-printed stuff in a separate pile.  The last thing I found was a whole bunch of business cards.  I figured I should type them into my computer just so I would always have a record.

And I think I woke up around this point.
