Not so Huzzah…

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Okay I actually would need to re-hem these pants (I thought the bottom bit was already hemmed but no dice.) But still! 2″ more of pants is super-exciting!

Huzzah!

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I just realized that I can make at least one of my work-like pants about 2″ longer (without needing to re-hem) by taking out the hem (I don't know why I never thought to look before) so no more mis-matched sock or “show 1″ of bare leg while sitting down” worries anymore!

This will be a weekend date with the stitch-ripper!

I think I’m almost ready

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I do believe that I’m almost ready to do actual work at my place of employment now.

This excites me, because it’s kind of boring sitting around waiting for someone to have the time to come sit with me and show me what I’m supposed to be doing.  I get along pretty good with the other two estimators in the company so that’s always a plus.

But yesterday, I was given this sort of test, full of 25 different estimates and some general guidelines as to how to quote them.  Then told to show how I would think they should be run on the various presses.  I got most of the simple ones okay.  A few of the tricky ones I got as well (I caught one of the two that could be run dutch/mixed grain, and I questioned whether litho printing or digital printing would work on one of two)

Other than the fact that it was open to intrepretation whether or not my methods would be the absoloute BEST, at least I was not horribly wrong on any of the problems.

After that meeting, I ended up spending much of the afternoon plugging the same situations (with more details) into the estimating system to see what prices I would end up with.  My assumption being that I need to know where to find all these things.  I banged out all 25 of them (overall pretty simple) in a matter of a few hours.  Sat around for a bit and finally told my coworkers I’m leaving early as I had nothing better to do with my time.  They didn’t seem to mind (I’m always the first to get into the office anyways so far)

Day 3 down.

Just Thursday and Friday to go.  I think the plan was for me to start working live quotes on Monday.  But lord knows they’ll probably want me starting this Friday instead.  I hope someone fixes up my computer soon though because it’s horribly slow & old compared to what everyone else in my nook of an office is using!

First day of work (the real post)

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Today was my first day of work. Assuming I didn’t die from it… I’ll probably add more to this entry later! Here we go. Didn’t really do much of anything really. Got there just in the nick of time (8am) Sort of followed people around, kept getting the grand tour over and over and over. Sat around not doing much (wish I bought a newspaper or a book or something) Was taught some of the program that I’ll be using. Left on my own to figure out the program a bit more. Finally was told to go home early since anyone who WOULD be showing me anything, was leaving early or already left, so there really was no point in me being there afterwards. I took the opportunity to leave early so I was home before 5pm. A rare feat indeed, I’ve been told.
