Where were we…
Ah, yes, my HR manager trying to get me to not leave early because we are short staffed because we bloody can’t well keep staff in the seats, and they’re leaving faster than we can hire them. Why hiring takes so long is beyond me, because our jobs can be done with blindfolded monkeys.
So while I understand her plight, I tried to explain myself with a reply similar to the following:
I understand we are short staffed and this is an inconvenience. I have done everything I could to move the time, unfortunately this was the best I could do. I had already changed my appointment from 1pm in the afternoon to 4:30pm to minimize the time away from the office.
HR replies with a simple “Thanks.”
Have I mentioned that it took until I e-mailed saying “Hey I need to leave early” was I told that I was training a new person? (There were rumours we were supposed to have a new person start on Wednesday but that didn’t happen)
So today comes around, I’m meeting this new person and as early as I could muster, I e-mail HR and my boss again going “So… when I leave at 3pm today who should the new person sit with?”
I seemed to have smacked someone upside the head with that comment. Because I was faced with a reply from HR of “I thought you weren’t leaving early, you said in your last e-mail that your appointment was changed from 1pm to 4:30. Please clarify.”
So… I am now baffled at the denseness and stupidity I need to deal with. I reply.
My apologies, I thought it was made clear. My appointment was originally at 1pm which would have resulted in me leaving at 11:30 in the morning. I was able to change it to 4:30pm which was the latest time available, but with 90 minutes of travel time I will need to leave at 3pm to make it on time.
Now in my head I’m thinking “If I had an appointment at 1pm, why would I ask to leave at 3pm? And if I’m saying “This was the best I could do” doesn’t that generally mean I tried but I still sort of failed?
Anyways, not all was lost. I got to my interview half an hour early, I was able to leave generally on time, and no one really made a big stink about it. It was an hour. The world will not end if I leave an hour early.
Especially since I stayed half an hour late both Monday and Tuesday, and an hour late Wednesday to try and make up the time.
