I think I would die of embarassment

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

So my work has this thing where they insist that everyone, or at least all the CSR’s can type at least 45 words per minute.  This is stated clearly in the advertisements they put up whenever they are hiring new CSR’s which seems to feel like all the time since everyone is either quitting or being removed from the system.  Oh, and when you come in for your interview, they take you to a free typing website to see how fast your speed is.  I have a feeling I will be next to be removed once the new people who started this past week will be fully trained, anyways I digress. As I digress some more, I find it quite sad that they can’t afford software to test your speed but rely on what I feel is not a 100% accurate way of testing.
I also take a gander through everything that ends up on the fax machine quite frequently.  And one of the things the higher ups do very poorly is the fact that we only have one printer in the office that’s hooked up to everyone, and the managerial type people never pick up their print outs.

Well, I found that one of the people who applied for the job, her typing speed just so happened to be 32 words per minute, and with only 92% accuracy.

I found that very depressing.

I can’t believe people in this day and age can type that slowly.

That’s two seconds per word.  And not even getting them right.

When I did my test when I was getting hired, I somehow pulled off I believe 102 words per minute with 99% accuracy.  The HR manager hiring person didn’t believe my test result for some reason (she picked the website, and stood behind me the whole three minutes as I typed my fingers off, lord knows why she wouldn’t believe the test score) but she made me do the test again.  As if I don’t have anything better to do than re-type 3 minute typing tests.

But I typed it again.  A different passage the second time obviously, but since they didn’t “believe” my first test score, I intentionally typed the second one slower.  And I thought I typed a lot slower.  And my final score was something like 98 words per minute with 100% accuracy.

And everyone wow’ed.

And you know what?  I’ve *NEVER* had to type this fast at work before.

But still, if I only typed 32 words per minute, I think I would cry.

I think I type 32 words per minute with 3 fingers.  On my left hand. With my eyes closed.

I should try that some day.

OH MY GOD ALL THE COOL KIDS ARE DOING IT!!!

Carrot fest was… well it was okay I suppose

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Carrot fest was two weekends ago in Bradford, Ontario.  Now to celebrate the mighty carrot doesn’t really take a whole lot of energy.  But I guess I had set my sights up a little higher than I should have, and I also slept in a little more than I should have.

One of my main goals for going was to watch, and possibly enter, the arm wrestling competition.  Now before you get all uppity on me about such a strange sport, one of my friend’s brother is Devon Larratt who is super high up there on Canadian, North American and likely World circuts in arm wrestling.  And somehow a bunch of my friends, after going to an arm wrestling meet, all thought I might be interested in it, and I was, but just not enough to really source out a club or something in the Toronto area.

Well, we got there and they said they were starting at 11am and I was there maybe around 1pm, but couldn’t find anything at all.  We were only looking on the street and figured it would be easy to spot.  Not so much.

I didn’t know there was a drumming workshop going on outside of one particular restaurant, and didn’t think to ask when I Saw them setting up a bunch of drumkits.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the teenage garage band that was playing at the time.

The rides and bouncy stuff and rock climbing stuff was all very obviously geared towards little kids.

I wasn’t interested in any of the crafts or knick-knacks that were being sold.

There were very few carrots and carrot-products being sold, although there was a man dressed up AS a carrot handing out baby carrots out of a basket.

We didn’t want to stay long enough to watch the wrestling at the end.

It was a good walk though, and was still pretty fun.  Even though it proved I really need to get my cardio up because walking that far… kinda hurt in that heat.

Oh… and a week later, I found out why I couldn’t find the arm wrestling.  It was being held in one of the pubs.  Go bloody figure.  Entry would have been free for me too because it would have been my first competition.  Oh well, always next year!

I cave I cave! I'm posting a YouTube video!

Because everyone else already has.

Myspace vs. Facebook

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

I’m pretty into Myspace I suppose.  I found a group of friends on there when I wouldn’t have otherwise ever known them, and they spawned other friends and other chance meetings and generally a whole lot of that sort of stuff.  I always want to be able to meet new people.

See the problem with Facebook is you’re supposed to meet people you already know.  Or at least knew.  And that’s the thing, I have a tendancy to recycle friends because people after a while get sick of me and having to talk to them all over again sometimes is… not the best of plans.

Facebook is pretty popular right now.  Everyone’s searching out new friends from their old friends.  Me… I just don’t have many pleasent memories from when I was younger so it’s just not nearly as exciting.  I just find it funny when people talk about how addicting Facebook is.

I don’t get it.

I just don’t get it.
