One Ring to Rule them All
So I just got back from seeing Lord of the Rings, the Musical. It was a gift from Brandon, well moreso from his Grandma, who decided to not go to the show even though the ticket was already purchased, as it was too long. After all, it’s retelling 3 books, and I really didn’t blame her.
While I’d never read the books nor watched the movies, I really enjoyed it. It was always my goal to read the books first, then watch all the movies. Of course I end up going to see the play first which really probably should have been last.
Rumour has it, that the play is true to the books but not the movies. But either way I was extremely confused. I’m happy that I even bothered to read The Hobit, which gave me enough background knowledge to know there was a ring, and that it would turn people invisible.
Still though, I very much enjoyed it even if I didn’t already know the ending, and that I think made it better. The costumes, and stage props and everything were amazing. The stage itself was freaking fantastic. Just very subtle movements of different levels caused the same area to look and feel completely different.
Seeing as I didn’t know any of the characters nor any of the storyline, I must say I wish there were large bubbles above everyone’s head to say who they were, and what their purpose was. I’ll freely admit it took me a good long while before I realized the guys in brown hooded robes and giant sticks were actually playing trees.
Anyways, yes. Good play to go see. Although, read the books first if you have the time!
